Faith Sommerfield Memorial Lecture Series

The Faith Sommerfield Memorial Lecture commemorates the life of Faith Sommerfield, the late founder of the Completed Life Initiative. This lecture series commemorates Ms. Faith Sommerfield’s lifelong interest in broadening the scope of end-of-life care, specifically regarding the notion of how all individuals might live completed lives. Each keynote speaker addresses how people can live good lives and achieve good deaths according to their own personal values and wishes. CLI hosts the lecture at Columbia University in partnership with the Program in Bioethics.

On September 18, 2025, the Completed Life Initiative hosted the 3rd Annual Faith Sommerfield Memorial Lecture. The discussion featured Jennifer Senior, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author known for her writing on grief, and Dr. Arthur Caplan, PhD, an internationally renowned author on bioethics and the founding head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

2023 Lecture

Our inaugural lecture featured the renowned philosopher, Peter Singer. Born in Melbourne in 1946, he has been a professor of bioethics at Princeton University since 1999. Often credited with triggering the modern animal rights movement and frequently cited for his treatise on ending global poverty, Singer can best be encapsulated by the concept of effective altruism: finding the most efficient way to do the most good.
