Intersectionality & the Queering of Death – Spotlight Series

In this month’s Spotlight, End-of-Life Doula Ocean Phillips (they/them), introduces us to the concept of the “Queering of Death.” They present how our various intersecting cultural backgrounds, identities, and beliefs greatly affect the way we interact with each other, especially in death care. Ocean explains how having cross-cultural competencies is vital to providing equal care to people of all backgrounds. During this LGBTQ+ Pride Month, it is especially vital to remember that not everyone who interacts with your death cafe, support group, medical practice, or otherwise will come from a background similar to yours. Discussions with folks of all different diverse identities should not only be expected, but welcomed in these spaces, if we want to truly be able to call them “safe.”
