BJ Miller, MD
BJ Miller, MD, speaks internationally on the themes of living well in the face of illness and death. Dr. Miller has practiced and taught in all major settings: home, hospital, clinic, and residential care facility. In his work, he draws upon his personal experiences with disability and his undergraduate studies in art history as much as his medical education. He has been profiled in the New York Times, interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, Tim Ferriss, and Krista Tippett and co-authored the book, A Beginner’s Guide to the End (Simon & Schuster, 2019). Dr. Miller is the President and Co-Founder of Mettle Health in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Unprecedented: Understanding Multifaceted Suffering

How does someone maintain their personhood while suffering through a complicated illness? Session Two will explore different experiences of suffering, specifically looking at psychological suffering, diminished states of consciousness, disability, and loss. Can the violation of one’s autonomy itself be a part of suffering? What if a person is not aware that their autonomy is being violated? This session will examine how to build empathy and increase awareness for individuals who face suffering and distress at the end of their life.

God and Death: Examining Suffering from Faith Perspectives

What is a good death from the perspective of different theological traditions? Session Three will examine how religious and spiritual traditions have well-tried ideas on what comprises a good death, and how to amplify the sacredness of dying within an individual’s preferred tradition. Our speakers will examine existential suffering and the physical suffering that results from terminal illness from the lens of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions.
