Emily Beer

Emily A. Beer, JD, MS

LEGAL FELLOW

Emily is an attorney with a MS in Bioethics. As the Completed Life Initiative’s first Legal Fellow, Emily supports CLI’s projects by analyzing the varied legal and ethical issues that arise during CLI’s work.

 

In addition to her work with CLI, Emily is a peer reviewer and staff member of Columbia University’s journal, Voices in Bioethics. Emily is a member of the Innovative Bioethics Forum, and enjoys collaborating on projects with Forum members. She is a Teaching Associate for Columbia University’s Bioethics Department. She is an editor for a Digital Society special collection about exploring technology as a social determinant of health. Emily is a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Bioethical Issues Committee and the Empire State Bioethics Consortium. Her current research is focused on medical implant innovation systems and patient protection. She is particularly interested in the human and societal implications of emergent technology.

 

Emily completed her undergraduate studies at Vassar College, majoring in Science, Technology, and Society and minoring in Social and Political Philosophy. She then obtained her juris doctor degree from Cornell Law School. After law school, Emily practiced as an attorney, assisting clients with a broad range of litigation matters. Emily then decided to shift her career back towards science, technology, and ethics, beginning by obtaining a MS in Bioethics from Columbia University.
